History of Babylon Rooftop

A rooftop escape above the city

Perched above the city in Pitt Street Mall, Babylon Rooftop is an elevated, sprawling restaurant, rooftop bar and entertainment venue located atop Westfield Sydney.

In the heart of the city yet tucked away among terraces and garden spaces, the venue unfolds as a maze of restaurant areas, lush rooftop bars and intimate dining nooks that create the feeling of stepping into several different worlds.

Inspired by the legend of the Hanging Gardens of Ancient Babylon, guests gather to share modern Middle Eastern dishes in the restaurant and rooftop bar from a menu designed for every time of day and every mood.

Warm textures and vibrant tones of burnt orange, mauve, mahogany and blue-grey flow through expansive terraces, open-air bars and lively indoor dining spaces. The result is an urban oasis that echoes the grandeur of the ancient city itself.

From long lunches to sunset cocktails and late-night gatherings, Babylon Rooftop offers a year-round escape defined by memorable food, drinks and atmosphere.

The venue is designed for conversations, cocktails, long lunches and lively evenings, with live music and rooftop energy that builds as the night unfolds.

Perfect for casual catch-ups, celebrations and nights out with friends, the experience is shaped as much by the atmosphere as by the guests themselves.

The beginning of Babylon

Babylon Rooftop opened in mid-2019 as part of a major rooftop development at Westfield Sydney.

Since opening, the venue has offered guests a journey through Middle Eastern flavours and hospitality from the moment they step through the doors.

The inspiration behind Babylon

The story of the Hanging Gardens of Ancient Babylon remains one of the most fascinating mysteries of the ancient world.

Listed among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, historians still debate whether the gardens truly existed. Even today, they remain one of history’s most enduring architectural mysteries.

Whether myth or reality, the Hanging Gardens have long symbolised love, devotion and the desire to bring nature into urban environments.

That sense of wonder and greenery lives on in the atmosphere of Babylon Rooftop.

The Babylon experience

At the heart of Babylon Rooftop is one of the great traditions of Middle Eastern hospitality: sharing food.

The menu is designed for groups to explore the flavours and textures of Levantine cuisine — the culinary traditions of the countries bordering the eastern Mediterranean.

Colourful meze plates sit alongside larger dishes inspired by the region’s land and sea.

Many dishes are prepared over wood fire and charcoal on a custom-built three-metre Mangal grill.

Highlights include borek- flaky pastry filled with house-made basturma (seasoned air-dried cured beef), roasted mushroom and mozzarella – as well as oysters served with squid-ink cracker.

The menu also features a soup inspired by a dish traditionally served at Turkish weddings, along with slow-braised lamb neck cooked for 12 hours and served with manti (lamb dumplings), yoghurt, mint and chilli butter.

The Rooftop

Echoing the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the rooftop is adorned with cascading greenery and open-air terraces that embrace Sydney’s climate year-round.

Panoramic city views and garden surroundings create an evocative backdrop for dining and drinks.

The Rooftop Bar menu features shareable bites designed to complement a diverse cocktail and beverage list. From vibrant meze to warm breads and smoky dishes from the Mangal grill, each dish is designed to pair seamlessly with a signature cocktail.
